An EGR valve is used together with a SCR system to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions The EGR system works by returning a small portion of exhaust gas to the engine's combustion chambers through the intake manifold, lowering combustion temperatures and therefore reducing the amount of NOx emitted. At high combustion temperatures, there is an increased formation of NOx, which is the exact opposite of the operation principle of the EGR valve. Another function is to reduce excess oxygen, which further contributes to lower nitrogen emissions.
